Triumph Bonneville T120R (US model)

HISTORY:

The 1970 Triumph T120R Bonneville (US model) is one of the most desirable and recognisable British motorcycles of its era. As the final pre–oil-in-frame Bonneville, it represents the end of the classic1960’s design before the major factory changes of 1971 — a key reason these machines are so sought after today.

At its heart is Triumph’s renowned 649cc parallel-twin, equipped with twin Amal Concentric carburettors, pancake air filters and a four-speed gearbox. The result is a lively and assured performance together with the unmistakable exhaust note that made the Bonneville name legendary. The bike retains its tubular steel frame, drum brakes front and rear and the clean, balanced proportions that define the pre-Oil In Frame models.

Is the US Market spec motorcycle, this bike features the smaller fuel 3 gal tank and higher handlebars, giving it the distinctive American-market appeal that many riders prefer. These details, combined with its period presentation, give the bike a particular across the market style used by celebs like Elvis in which his Triumph featured in ‘Stay Away Joe’ and ordinary people of the day who saw Triumph bikes winning events over the years. Although originally supplied with painted steel mudguards, period dealer upgrades to stainless steel mudguards were common, and this bike reflects that authentic showroom practice.

This is a highly usable, 'Ruby red' classic, with lovely proportions and an easy, confidence-inspiring riding feel. This particular bike was rebuilt in 2018 with a nut and bolt restoration and has done 273 miles. It is equally suited to shows and events as it is to enjoyable fair-weather riding on flowing A-roads — a genuine rider’s Bonneville with strong collector appeal.
